The things we do for love

For Love

Due to the flu, miserable weather, the shock of my bank balance and the christmas chocolate I’ve had to get through, it’s been a slow start to the new year. But now I’ve pretty much kicked the sniffles into touch and wrapped the excess chocolate up for peoples gifts for next christmas, so now I can get back to some illustrations.

This image was inspired by my cat Tilly, who is sat on my lap as I type making it a bit awkward and causing me to hit the keys like a robot. It is called “For Love” – using the idea that cats like leaving dead thing in your house when you return to show their love for you. A gift you could say, but a dead gift. Luckily Tilly has not brought us any dead items yet, just had the odd spider casualty. She does make a mental chimp sound when she getting ready to chase birds and squirrels though, that’s always entertaining!

Digital Artist Feature

Right Hand Page

I was recently lucky to be asked to submit some artwork for a feature in the Digital Artist Magazine. The issue was released just in time for the new year so its a great start for 2011 for me. The feature is about how my work has progressed to its current style, from simple vector images to a more detailed illustration style. I hope to further develop this style this year and see where it takes me.

Its a great motivational boost for me as there are so many artists/illustrators out there, its nice to see some people actually liking and taking an interest in my work. Many thanks to April Madden at Digital Artist for the great opportunity.

Happy New Year everyone!!!

FREE Flu for everybody!!

Christmas, Illustration

Flu

I’ve been hit with this christmas flu bug virus thingy like most of the country, so this image speaks for itself really. Like everyone else I thought it would be nice to relax a bit over christmas, enjoy a few drinks with friends and family, then be nice and refreshed for the new year. But no. I’ve spent as much money on christmas presents as I have on cough medicines and paracetamols.

Only four more days until new years eve. fingers crossed I can shift this pesky bug by then, happy flu-ing people!!!

Artistic absolution

Illustration, Religion

Absolve

This image came from a sketch I’ve had for a while, although it has progressed a little from its early scribble. Titled {Absolve} – meaning ‘to set free from an obligation or the consequences of guilt’ – this image has quite an obvious religious theme when linked with its title. Although, at a quick glance it could just look like a bunch of hoodies with umbrellas in some massive angry rain.

Printed Christmas cards

Christmas, Illustration

OMG. It is only a week and a half until christmas! Every year seem to sneak up on me a little quicker, but this year stormed past Kris Akabusi style “Awwwrriiiiiggght!!!”

I’ve Done all of my christmas shopping…….. online……. just got to wait and see if it all turns up in the post!! The house is decorated and the tree is up, with no cat related incidents as of yet. Just got to get these christmas cards written and sent off.

I finally got the cards printed onto some back of cardslovely textured card. The texture shows through the image aswell which looks great, just the effect I was looking for. On the back I have the web details etc in colours that match the front, which finishes it of nicely.

Now I just need to rely on the post office to deliver these out to people…. so they may get them by the end of january. Lovely stuff.

Next issue

I have a double page feature in next months Digital Artist magazine, issue 15~ out on 30th December 2010. I am dead excited, can’t wait to see it all glossy and printed!! As an early treat I had a little image and mention in the ‘Next Issue’ section of the current issue (14). It felt like Christmas had come early and I had opened up that Tomy Super Cup football game that I always wanted!!

Christmas card #3

Christmas, Illustration

Surprise

Thats right… you’ve guessed it, it’s Christmas card number 3. This started off as a regular snowman just looking a bit evil, but it just didn’t seem quite right. So Mr Skele-snowman was born, or resurrected even. The text in this one is taken from the snowman song. Ahhhhhhh how cute.

One more Christmas card then I have a set of four, which will make a lovely large poster image. Keep em peeled!!

Christmas card #2

Christmas, Illustration

Watch Out

So here is Christmas card number two. A couple of characters from other artwork popped in there in children’s toy size versions. Plus a skeleton jack in the box, which personally I think would be a pretty cool gift rather than a scary one. The text is taken from a line in the well know Christmas ditty “Santa Claus is coming to town”.

Be good kids, he’s watching!!!!

Humbug

It’s that time of year again, the build up to christmas. Girlfriends and wives have endless christmas lists to shop for, boyfriends and husbands haven’t got a clue what they want so they just get socks and man stuff, and everyone gets stuck in massive turkey, alcohol and biscuit trolley queues at Tesco.

Here is my first christmas card design. One colour illustrator image printed on recycled/textured card. Bah Humbug!!!

We Are All Going To Hell

Illustration, Life, Religion

We are all going to hell

I’m not a religious person. I like the art, imagery, statues, cathedrals, churches and the theory of it including the way it gives people hope or helps people focus on something when they don’t have anything or are in troubled times. The catholic church, kind of the Bang and Olufsen of religions,  has always been a bit of a dodgy subject. And theres something not quite right about it that has always bugged me.

Jesus washed peoples feet, and lived in a shed or cave or something right? And rumour has it he was a bit of a magician. So why does the Pope live in an almost golden city with mafia like bodyguards? Hmmmm. This led me to looking up on t’internet what the Pope’s salary is and if he gets Christmas bonuses for being extra pope-like? Turns out he doesn’t have a paycheck like us regular folk. He doesn’t even need money in fact. He is almost above money. Something not right there hey?

Anyway this quick little illustration/print is what spawned from these thoughts. See you all in hell!!!
